How to Fish: Boss Fish Tips & All Quest Bosses
Bosses in How to Fish aren't rod puzzles — they're gun fights with fins. Here's every quest boss in order, what to bring, and the tricks that make them trivial.
The beer thief (first boss)
The lighthouse keeper's beer has been stolen, and the thief is a giant creature — most commonly identified in guides as the Spider Crab. This quest doubles as your introduction to boss hunting:
- Find the thief near the lighthouse, kill it, and carry the corpse back to the keeper. It's a delivery quest, not a dialogue.
- Don't fight under-geared. A pistol from the cabin board is enough early, but bring bullets.
- This quest also fixes the boat-key confusion — completing it (plus re-talking to the keeper and Melvin) is what unlocks the wreck.
The terror bird
Later, islanders ask for help with a giant bird terrorizing them. This is adefend mission, not a fishing trip:
- Lead it, dump the mag, and throw dynamite when it perches.
- Seagull-steal experience helps here — the bird fights dirty.
Deadliest catch (military boss)
A military contact pings you for the "deadliest catch": a big creature that needs theupgraded gun and the boat. This is a boss hop between islands, not a rod puzzle — bring the best engine and plenty of ammo.
The final island
The last quest in the chain ends at the final island with the game's credits roll. Two things matter here:
- Handyman: beat the final boss with empty hands — unequip your gun before the cutscene so you don't panic-fire. Fist the boss only once you know the arena.
- Don't combine Handyman with Easy — save the 10-second kill for a replayed small boss.
The 10-second "Easy" trick
The Easy achievement (any boss in 10 seconds) is simpler than it sounds:
- Replay a small boss you've already beaten.
- Gun already out, stand on the spawn point.
- The first magazine is the fight. Don't roleplay the rod.
FAQ
Which boss should I fight first?
The beer thief (Spider Crab) — it's the lighthouse quest and unlocks your way off the first island.
Can I fight bosses solo?
Yes — all quest bosses are beatable solo. Co-op makes trick shots louder, not easier.
What's the best boss weapon?
A fully-attached rifle or pistol — community consensus is to park upgrades on one weapon instead of spreading parts.
Do bosses respawn?
Bosses can be replayed (needed for the Easy and Handyman achievements).
